How to Disable Gmail AI
Some users find Gmail's recent AI additions (like the "Help me write" overlays or "Tab to improve" suggestions) intrusive rather than helpful. Having an algorithm repeatedly offer to summarize your messages or auto-generate your replies can feel forced. For many, it sends the annoying message that the software thinks you need to outsource your basic reading and writing to a machine.
If you want a quiet inbox without the constant AI nagging, you can disable these systems. However, Google bundles these settings in specific ways, meaning you have to know exactly which toggles to hit to avoid breaking traditional features like your inbox tabs.
Here is the straightforward guide to stripping the AI out of your Gmail account.
1. How to Disable Gemini and Generative AI
If your primary annoyance is the generative AI features (like the unsolicited email summaries, the "Help me write" button, and the inline prompts begging you to rewrite your drafts), you need to disable the Workspace smart features.
- Open Gmail Settings: Log into Gmail on your web browser. Click the Gear icon in the top right corner, then click See all settings.
- Find Workspace Smart Features: Stay on the General tab and scroll down until you see the section labeled Google Workspace smart features (or "Smart features and personalization in other Google products").
- Manage Workspace Settings: Click the button labeled Manage Workspace smart feature settings. A pop-up window will appear.
- Toggle Off the AI: In the pop-up, toggle OFF both options: Smart features in Google Workspace (this kills the Gemini summaries and drafts) and Smart features in other Google products. Click Save.
2. How to Disable Ghost Text and Auto-Replies
Long before generative AI, Google introduced predictive text and quick-reply buttons. If you want to stop Gmail from guessing your next word while typing or offering three generic reply chips at the bottom of every email, you can turn these off individually without losing your inbox organization.
- Access the General Tab: Go to Settings (Gear icon) > See all settings > General tab.
- Turn off Smart Compose: Scroll down to the Smart Compose section and select Smart Compose off. This stops the gray "ghost text" from appearing as you type.
- Turn off Smart Reply: Scroll down slightly further to the Smart Reply section and select Smart Reply off. This removes the automated reply buttons at the bottom of received emails.
- Save Changes: Scroll to the very bottom of the page and click Save Changes.
3. The Nuclear Option: Disabling All Smart Features
There is a master switch that kills all data processing used for personalization in Gmail, Chat, and Meet. However, there is a major catch: disabling this master switch will also permanently disable your automatic inbox tab categorization (Primary, Social, Promotions, Updates) and smart package tracking cards.
- Navigate to Smart Features: Go to Settings > See all settings > General tab.
- Disable the Master Switch: Scroll down to the section labeled Smart features and personalization.
- Uncheck the Box: Uncheck the box next to Turn on smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet.
- Confirm and Save: Confirm your choice in the prompt that appears, then scroll to the bottom of the settings page and click Save Changes. Gmail will reload with a completely unfiltered inbox.
